Coming back to my American story, I am sharing with you the most dangerous situation I have ever experienced.
Read the beginning of the story here.
When I happily arrived in Wildwood, NJ, I didn’t have much time to rest. The next day I had to start working. I woke up in the morning, opened the balcony door, and breathed in the fresh air coming from the ocean. I was so excited, and I could not wait to see what my workplace looked like.
I did my morning routine and got ready to go to work. My first job in my life. There also was a friend of mine, Ola, who I was going to work with. So that day we were going to work together.
Wildwood turned out to be a small town so we could get to work on foot. We were off to work, but unfortunately… we didn’t reach our destination. A terrible thing happened to us.
When we were walking down the street towards the boardwalk (where the shop we were going to work was located) we noticed that there was not anyone else on the street besides us. Actually, it is a common situation in the USA where mostly everyone drives a car.
Ola and I were chatting and predicting what kind of person our supervisor was going to be and what our workplace would look like. Suddenly, in the blessed quietness of the deserted street, we heard the sound of a car stopping on the sidewalk behind us. We turned back and had a glance at it. We saw a Mexican guy driving a green pick-up truck.
We kept on walking when suddenly I felt someone grab me and start to pull me back. It was THAT man from the truck. I started to scream out, but as you can imagine there wasn`t anyone to help, except Ola. She started to pull me out of the kidnapper’s arms. To say that I was deadly frightened is an understatement.
Fortunately, I managed to get out from the criminal’s grasp, and we started to run away as fast as possible. We didn’t look behind, but I heard the loud sound of the car engine disappearing around the corner of the street. My heart was beating so fast and I couldn’t catch my breath for a while.
But it wasn’t the end of this horror.
As you could guess, we were late for work. Obviously, our boss had questions for us about why we were late. Taking into consideration the fact it was our first day at a new job we felt really embarrassed. Well, we couldn`t find a better explanation, but told the truth. Guess what happened? Of course, nobody believed us.
The manager became angry and threatened she would call the police if we didn’t tell the truth. So, she did. It only took 5 minutes for the police officers to arrive. Two good-looking policemen were standing in front of the shop. I felt as if I was in a movie. The black and white car, the ocean, and handsome, well-built policemen.
We explained what happened in detail, but they wanted us to show them the place where the situation took place. Considering the fact that it was our second day in the town we did not know the street name. And the officers decided to take us for a tour around the area so we could recognize it.
How strange it was sitting in the back of the police car which actually was a cage for criminals. You could not open the door from the inside, and you had to talk to the coppers using a mic.
The men were driving around the place and we were trying to identify the place of the crime. We recognized the crossroad nearby and the policemen stopped by to question potential witnesses in the neighborhood.
After that they took us to the police department to talk about the situation more precisely. And you know what? There were two Bulgarian girls who became victims of that Mexican guy. What a coincidence!
Later on, I found out that he was wanted in 4 states for sexual assault. We had been interviewed individually and of course at the very beginning we swore to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.
The detective asked me a few questions about the kidnapper’s appearance and how it all happened. The conversation was being recorded on a Dictaphone. Then it was converted into a script on the computer and I signed stating that everything I told was written correctly.
Then they took Ola and I home and told me to stay home until the next morning. The next day we were woken up by the ring of a doorbell. When I opened the door, I saw two officers standing in front of me. They brought 6 pictures including one of the criminal and asked us to point at him. So, we did.
Before the policemen left, they gave us instructions about what to do if any dangerous situations arise again.
Three hours later we were informed that the Mexican guy was caught and sent to jail. So, we could safely move around the area.
In a week we got a letter from the police informing us that the criminal was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
Yeah, it was only day 2 of my adventures. And six months of stay was before me.
What do you think I told my mom when she called to ask how I was?
